G8 Field Trip to National Bunraku Theatre

This month our grade 8 class went to see the Bunraku performance, The Love Suicides at Sonezaki by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. This play is an extension of our Othello unit and Chikamatsu Monzaemon is known as the Shakespeare of Japan. All of us really enjoyed watching the play, albeit some people were very sleepy during the play’s opening. It was a great play with great acting and music, especially during the dramatic ending scene. The narrator was amazing as he performed the emotional ending song. We all thought that the dolls used were very detailed, and the movement of the dolls were also very realistic and impressive. We were happy to be able to take a picture with two Bunraku puppets after the performance. It was really nice to learn about Bunraku and its history, as it’s a very cultural and historical thing in Japan. Finally, we all also just had a lot of fun hanging out and talking with each other outside of the classroom environment.
