The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an educational framework designed for children aged 3 to 12 by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization. It emphasizes a student-centered approach, encouraging active, inquiry-based learning. Here are the key elements of the PYP:

What are the highlights of the PYP?

1. Holistic Development
The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child. This includes academic growth as well as social, emotional, and physical development.

2. Transdisciplinary Themes

The curriculum is organized around six transdisciplinary themes:

Who We Are

Where We Are in Place and Time

How We Express Ourselves

How the World Works

How We Organize Ourselves

Sharing the Planet

These themes are designed to help students make connections across different subject areas and understand the world around them.

3. Inquiry-Based Learning
Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore, and engage in hands-on activities. Inquiry-based learning helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

4. Conceptual Understanding
The PYP emphasizes understanding key concepts that are universal and transferable across different subjects and contexts. These concepts include form, function, causation, change, connection, perspective, responsibility, and reflection.

5. Attitudes and Skills
The PYP aims to develop a set of attitudes and skills that are essential for lifelong learning. These include curiosity, respect, empathy, cooperation, and communication skills.

6. Action
Students are encouraged to take action based on their learning. This could be in the form of community service, advocacy, or other initiatives that make a positive impact.

7. Assessment
Assessment in the PYP is ongoing and varied. It includes both formative (ongoing) and summative (end of unit) assessments. Students are often involved in self-assessment and reflection on their learning.

8. Learner Profile
The PYP aims to develop students who are:

Inquirers
Knowledgeable
Thinkers
Communicators
Principled
Open-minded
Caring
Risk-takers
Balanced
Reflective

9. Collaboration and Community
Teachers, students, and parents collaborate closely to support the child's learning journey. The PYP encourages a strong sense of community and partnership.

Overall, the Primary Years Programme aims to create a stimulating and nurturing environment where children can thrive and become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners.
